Theological Issues with Biblical Interpretations by Some Protestant Christian Denominations

Issues with Protestant Interpretations of the Creation Story (and other theological questions)

March 20, 2010

By: Peter Egan

I'd like to begin by stating for the record that I have no angst for or issues with Protestant Christians (or anyone else, to each his own). That said, there are a few interpretations of parts of the Bible that don't logically make sense to me that are embraced by many of these denominations. This post is intended to provoke respectful dialog between Christians so as to develop a better understanding of one another's beliefs and rationale for interpreting scripture in a few specific instances.

Baptists and numerous other Protestant Christian denominations lose me by embracing an interpretation of the first story of Creation (Genesis I) as occurring within a seven earth-day time period. This despite the fact that the defining criteria for "earth days" is a 360 degree revolution of earth in orbit around the sun, while the earth itself hadn't been created until after two days had passed. That interpretation (to this author anyway), doesn't logically add-up.

These particular brands of religion (various Protestant denominations that adhere to the beliefs outlined herein) further alienate
me with the whole condemnation of alcohol consumption as a sinful act. Bear in mind the guy upon whom the religion is based around (the son of God) once famously made many-a-friend when he revived a dying party that had run out of booze by transforming water into wine. That to me doesn't sound like a God who frowns upon the occasional spiking of the bowl of punch that is life.

Between those two examples, all credibility was with most Protestant Christian denominations lost as far as I was and am concerned.

If anyone reading this happens to be a member of a Protestant denomination that adheres to the beliefs critically questioned above, please feel free to comment at the bottom of the page to present your side of the argument and explain your perspective. Your comments will be published, and if of substantial length and/or quality, potentially even featured as posts on the site. For those of you unfamiliar with the term "post", a post is what you're reading now, as opposed to a comment appearing at the bottom of a post.

So let's hear from you Protestants! I really am interested and excited to hear what you have to say and will embrace any responses to this article with an open mind. You will not be ridiculed for explaining the reasoning for your religious beliefs.
